Your first pelvic or speculum exam can be very daunting so here are some tips to help you relax: 1. If you feel nervous, let your healthcare provider know. This is a safe space and we can talk you through the exam so that it’s a good experience. 2. Take a deep breath. Try not to focus on your pelvis as this can make you tense and the exam uncomfortable. Instead, try to imagine your vagina opening like a flower to relax the muscles as much as possible. 3. Don’t be afraid to let your healthcare provider know if you’re uncomfortable. There are different sized speculums and different positions that may work better for you. Remember that the pelvic exam gives a lot of valuable information and helps in determining the appropriate care for you so don’t put it off any longer.
